Football: Daizen Maeda scores, buries penalty as Celtic lift League Cup

Dec 16, 2024

Japan forward Daizen Maeda scored before sealing the Scottish League Cup title in the shootout as Celtic edged Old Firm rivals Rangers 5-4 on penalties after an epic 3-3 draw in Sunday's final. Maeda pounced on some defensive confusion from Rangers to net on the hour mark at Hampden Park as Celtic came from behind to lead 2-1. Compatriot Reo Hatate and Maeda both scored in the shootout while Kyogo Furuhashi came off in the 76th minute in Glasgow as Celtic claimed the title for the 22nd time. "We had wonderful support from the fans and owe them the win," Maeda said after winning the title for the first time in two years. "My penalty was a total miss-hit but things turned out nicely. We've had lots of matches and I was feeling fatigued, but luck was on my side." Celtic's Daizen Maeda (R) scores in the second half of a Scottish League Cup football match against Rangers on Dec. 15, 2024, in Glasgow, Scotland. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo Nedim Bajrami rolled in a rebound for Rangers' 41st-minute opener and Greg Taylor's deflected shot brought Celtic level in the 56th before Maeda struck. The Japanese striker showed good control to bring a loose ball down before firing into the bottom corner with his left foot. Rangers' Mohammed Diomande held off his marker to score from a short corner in the 75th minute, Nicolas Kuhn turned in a cutback to restore Celtic's lead in the 87th before Danilo headed home just a minute later in a pulsating end to the regular 90 minutes. After no goals in extra time, Rangers' fourth penalty from Ridvan Yilmaz was saved by Kasper Schmeichel before Hatate buried his to give Celtic an advantage. Rangers keeper Jack Butland stepped up and scored to keep them alive, but Maeda found the left bottom corner to spark the celebrations. Celtic players (from L) Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate pose after the team won the Scottish League Cup with a victory over Rangers on Dec. 15, 2024, in Glasgow, Scotland. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo "I controlled well and scored well for the goal, but I'm looking back with regret for their third goal as it came after I failed to block the cross," Maeda said. "Those things decide matches and I believe strong teams must refine such areas, so I'll celebrate first and then reflect on it." In the English Premier League, Yukinari Sugawara came on in the 62nd minute with Southampton trailing 5-0 at halftime at home to Tottenham Hotspur. The score remained the same and manager Russel Martin was sacked after the loss as the Saints remain rock bottom with five points from 16 games.
